On Saturday, April 20, two Latvian citizens were detained for transporting persons crossing the state border illegally.

Border guards in cooperation with State Police officials stopped a Citroen Berlingo driven by a Latvian citizen in Skrudaliena Parish of Augšdaugava Municipality. While checking documents, three persons of Afro-Asian origin were found to be in the car without travel documents, valid visas and residence permits.

A short time later, in course of the investigation activities, another Latvian citizen, travelling in a BMW car, was detained on suspicion of providing support to migrants in the above-mentioned location.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the Latvian citizens under Section2851(2) of the Criminal Law for knowingly ensuring persons the possibility to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia, if such possibility is ensured for two or several persons.

The third-country nationals are stopped from illegally crossing the state border in accordance with the Cabinet Order No 184 of March 12, 2024 "Regarding Declaration of the Reinforced Operating Regime of the Border Guarding System ".
