The beginning of the summer for the State Border Guard of Latvia starts with significant involvement in strengthening the security of the Baltic Sea. Latvia continues to actively participate in international operational activities where border security, maritime surveillance and cooperation between European countries become a shared responsibility.
One of the main strands of cooperation in 2026 is participation in the Frontex joint operation “Baltic Sea 2026”, which is a multifunctional cooperation framework in the field of maritime border security between the countries of the Baltic Sea region, the Frontex Agency, the European Fisheries Control Agency and the European Maritime Safety Agency, with the aim of promoting a common approach to the implementation of coast guard functions in the Baltic Sea region.
From 1 June 2026 to 20 January 2027, the State Border Guard of Latvia participates in the Frontex joint operation “Baltic Sea 2026”, making a practical contribution to strengthening security within the area of responsibility of Latvia in the Baltic Sea. Within the framework of the operation, the State Border Guard of Latvia ensures the operation of the International Coordination Centre “Ventspils”, hosts Frontex Standing Corps officers, as well as involves the State Border Guard’s of Latvia vessels in the patrolling of the sea border.
The purpose of that operation is to support the European Union Member States – Finland, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland – in implementing effective and reinforced border control at sea borders. At the same time, it strengthens the internal security of the European Union, improves common situation awareness and promote enhanced cooperation between participating countries and European agencies.
The participation of the State Border Guard of Latvia in such operations confirms Latvia’s professional contribution to the protection of the EU’s external borders. It is not only a presence in an international operation, but also practical cooperation at sea, exchange of experience and joint action in responding to the modern challenges of border protection and maritime security.
