On 13 May 2026, experts of the State Border Guard of Latvia were rotated in the framework of the 5th operational period of joint operations coordinated by the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), ensuring Latvia’s continuous contribution to the operational activities coordinated by Frontex and to strengthening the security of the EU’s external borders. Following the rotation, 52 Latvian experts continue service duties in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Georgia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia and North Macedonia.
The purpose of the operations is to provide comprehensive operational support to the Law enforcement authorities of Member States by carrying out external border control in the land, sea and air domains, using technical resources and experts of the Member States, whose tasks include border check tasks, border surveillance, patrolling and obtaining operational information in close cooperation with the competent authorities of the host countries to reduce pressure deriving from irregular migration, the risks of cross-border crime and to ensure effective border control.
Since 13 May 2026, experts of the State Border Guard of Latvia have started their participation in the joint operation “Greece 2026” on the island of Chios, Greece, with one Mobile Surveillance System (hereinafter - MSS) of the State Border Guard of Latvia. The experts of the State Border Guard of Latvia will ensure Greek sea border surveillance, strengthening security in the region and providing support to Greece. Meanwhile, the second State Border Guard of Latvia MSS, along with crew, continues to provide support to the Bulgarian Law enforcement authorities.
Following the rotation, 63 Frontex Standing Corps experts from Austria, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden have been deployed in the structural units of the State Border Guard of Latvia, providing support to the State Border Guard of Latvia using Frontex off-road patrol vehicles, two Frontex MSS, and other necessary technical equipment.
