On Thursday, May 1, border guards detained a citizen of Uzbekistan for transporting a person who had illegally crossed the state border.

Border guards in the Dagda Parish of Krāslava Municipality, on the P55 road, noticed a suspicious Mercedes Benz E320 vehicle and began pursuing it. After stopping the vehicle, it was found that it was being driven by a citizen of Uzbekistan, and in the vehicle were eight people of Asian origin without valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the “carrier” under Article 285(1)3) of the Criminal Law for or for ensuring a large number of persons, i.e. more than five persons in one case, the possibility to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia.

Eight persons were prevented from illegally crossing the state border in accordance with Section 4 of the State Border Guard Law.

It has already been reported that between April 30 and May 5, officials of the State Border Guard prevented 620 attempts to illegally cross the Latvian–Belarusian state border, while in total this year, 2567 persons have been stopped from illegally crossing the state border.
