From 4 to 6 February, a meeting of the heads of the border guard institutions of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia took place in Latvia, attended by the Chief of the State Border Guard, General Guntis Pujāts, the Commander of the State Border Guard Service under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania, General Rustamas Ļubajevas, and the Deputy Director General of the Police and Border Guard Board of the Republic of Estonia, Police Colonel Veiko Kommusaar.
During the meeting, the participants discussed the situation at the external borders and within the countries in the context of the current geopolitical situation and the hybrid attacks carried out by aggressor states. Representatives of the Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonian delegations reviewed current trilateral cooperation and information-sharing mechanisms aimed at mitigating existing and potential risks and ensuring their effective prevention and response. In addition, agreeing to further strengthen cooperation, the delegations signed the Baltic Council of Ministers Action Plan for 2026.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the foreign delegations visited structural units of the Daugavpils Regional Board of the State Border Guard to gain insight into the real situation on the Latvia–Belarus state border and to familiarize themselves with the available technical equipment and infrastructure.
The Baltic Council of Ministers (BCM) is a cooperation institution of the governments of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, established on 13 June 1994. Its task is to ensure continuity of cooperation at the executive level of the states. In 2025, Latvia was the presiding country within the BCM, while in 2026 the presidency is being handed over to Estonia.
