On Saturday, July 19, a Latvian citizen was detained by border guards for transporting persons who had illegally crossed the State border.
After verifying received information about the transportation of border violators, border guards stopped a Citroën Jumpy SpaceTourer vehicle on the P52 road Zilupe–Šķaune–Ezernieki, in Šķaune Parish, Krāslava Municipality. The vehicle was driven by a Latvian citizen. Upon inspecting the vehicle, it was found that six persons of Asian origin were in the passenger compartment, without valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits.
Criminal proceedings were initiated against the “carrier” under Article 285(1)3) of the Criminal Law for ensuring a large number of persons, the possibility to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia.
Six persons were prevented from illegally crossing the state border in accordance with Section 4 of the State Border Guard Law.
