On Monday, October 6, border guards in Krāslava Municipality detained a Latvian citizen for transporting persons who had illegally crossed the state border.
During operational measures, border guards stopped a Peugeot vehicle in Kastulīna Parish, driven by a Latvian citizen. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the border guards established seven persons of Asian origin in the passenger and luggage compartments, all without valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits.
Criminal proceedings were initiated against the “currier” under Section 2851(3) of the Criminal Law for ensuring a large number of persons the possibility to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia.
Seven persons were prevented from illegally crossing the state border in accordance with Section 4 of the State Border Guard Law.
Additionally, administrative proceedings were initiated against the “currier” for violating Section 20 of the State Border Law of the Republic of Latvia, which stipulates that when staying in the border area, a person has the obligation to keep in possession and present upon a request of an official of the State Border Guard a document, which certifies the identity of person and the right to reside in the Republic of Latvia.
