On Monday, September 30, border guards, in Kraslava Municipality, detained a Latvian citizen for transporting persons who had illegally crossed the state border.

During a verification of the received information, border guards in Šķaune Parish, near a cemetery area, discovered a Renault Trafic vehicle stuck in the mud, driven by a Latvian citizen. Next to the vehicle were eight persons of Asian origin without valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits, who were attempting to push the vehicle out of the mud.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the “currier” under Section 2851(3) of the Criminal Law for ensuring a large number of persons the possibility to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia.

Eight persons were prevented from illegally crossing the state border in accordance with Section 4 of the State Border Guard Law.

It has also been established that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. Officials from the State Police were called to the scene and after performing a breath alcohol concentration measurement it was stated, that the alcohol concentration detected in the exhaled air of the driver was 1.61 per mille. Criminal proceedings were initiated under Section 262(1) of the Criminal Law for operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
