On 10–11 June 2026, Latvia hosted the Baltic Sea Region Border Control Cooperation (BSRBCC) Aviation Experts Meeting, organised by the State Border Guard of the Republic of Latvia in its capacity as the BSRBCC Presidency 2026.
The meeting brought together aviation experts and senior representatives from the BSRBCC Member States – Estonia, Lithuania, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Poland and Norway – as well as representatives of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), the Latvian Air Force of the National Armed Forces, the Civil Aviation Agency of Latvia and the Electronic Communications Office of Latvia.
The main objective of the meeting was to strengthen international cooperation in the field of aviation, promote the exchange of experience and discuss current challenges and future developments in maritime aerial surveillance and air support capabilities within the Baltic Sea region.
The first working day took place on 10 June at Adazi Airfield, where participants were introduced to Latvia’s experience in maritime aerial surveillance, the operational use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), and future development plans in this field. The programme included practical demonstrations of RPAS capabilities as well as a presentation of Latvia’s experience in the use of advanced data transmission solutions supporting border surveillance and other operational tasks. Representatives of the BSRBCC Member States also shared information on current developments, achievements and future plans in the area of maritime aerial surveillance.
On the second day of the meeting in Riga, participants discussed current developments related to Frontex-coordinated multipurpose maritime operations in the Baltic Sea region, recent regulatory changes concerning state aircraft operations within Latvian airspace, and the impact of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) interference, including spoofing and jamming, on aviation safety and security.
Participants highly appreciated the opportunity to exchange professional experience and strengthen cooperation among partner organisations, highlighting the importance of close international collaboration in addressing contemporary security challenges.
The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of BSRBCC Member States to further develop modern aviation and border surveillance capabilities and to enhance safety and security throughout the Baltic Sea region.
