From 12 October 2026 to 17 October 2026, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) Fundamental Rights Monitors visited the State Border Guard of Latvia. The aim of the visit was to get familiar with the work of the structural units of the State Border Guard of Latvia, the Frontex Standing Corps experts’ involvement in the operational activities in Latvia, as well as to discuss the issues of respect for fundamental rights in the daily work.

During the visit, the Frontex Fundamental Rights Office representatives visited the structural units of the SBG Riga Board, the SBG Daugavpils Board, SBG Ludza Board un SBG Viļaka Board.

During the visit up-to-date information was provided on crossing points and the functioning of the border surveillance units, operational situation, Frontex experts’ deployment and cooperation with the State Border Guard of Latvia officials.

Frontex fundamental rights monitoring is an essential part of European integrated border management. The mission of the Fundamental Rights Officer and the Fundamental Rights Monitoring Office is to independently monitor the compliance of operations implemented and supported by Frontex with the requirements of European Union and international law, as well as to provide advice and practical support on issues related to respect for fundamental rights.

These visits are important because border management is not only a matter of control and security, but also of ensuring human dignity, the rule of law and professional conduct in every situation. The presence of Fundamental Rights Monitors helps strengthen a common understanding of the application of fundamental rights in practice, promotes transparency and makes it possible to identify issues requiring further attention or clarification in a timely manner.
