On Saturday, 19 February, at the borderland on the Braslav - Daugavpils highway, border guards detained a citizen of Belarus, who offered a bribe in the amount of 10 EUR and a bottle of alcohol for the border guards not to pay attention to the fact that a man has parked his truck with a trailer in the operation zone of the traffic sign Nr.326 “No parking”.

The border guards have noticed a citizen of Belarus who had parked his truck with a trailer in the operation zone of the traffic sign Nr.326 “No parking”. In order not to draw up a protocol of an administrative violation and not to impose a penalty for a violation of the Road Traffic Regulation, the men offered a bribe in the amount of 10 EUR and bottle of alcohol for the border guards.

Criminal proceedings for a bribery have been initiated pursuant to Section 323, Paragraph one of the Criminal Law and the materials of the criminal case have been forwarded to the South Latgale Prosecutor’s Office for criminal prosecution.  The South Latgale Prosecutor’s Office prosecuted the person and imposed a fine in amount of 10 minimum monthly salaries, i.e. 5.000 EUR.

Additionally, according to paragraph 11 part 5 Section 57 of the Road Traffic Law for parking in the operation zone of the traffic sign Nr.326, a fine has been imposed for the person in the amount of eight units or 40 EUR.

In accordance with the Criminal Law of the Republic of Latvia bribery is classified as a serious crime punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment, temporary deprivation of liberty, forced labor or a fine of ten to two thousand minimum salaries set by the Government of the Republic of Latvia.
