On Thursday, August 21, border guards of the Criminal Investigation Service of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard detained, in Krāslava Municipality, a “carrier” transporting persons who illegally crossed the state border. The persons was using a vehicle fitted with a forged license plate identical to that of a genuine police vehicle.
As a result of operational measures, border guards stopped a Ford Transit Custom vehicle on the P61 road in Skaista Parish, driven by a third-country national. During the vehicle inspection, 14 persons of Asian origin were found inside without valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits. It was also established that the vehicle’s license plate was forged and identical to that of a genuine Ford Transit Custom police vehicle of the South Latgale Station of the Latgale Regional Police Board in Daugavpils.
Criminal proceedings were initiated against the “carrier” under Article 285(1)3) of the Criminal Law for ensuring more than five persons the possibility to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia.
Fourteen persons were prevented from illegally crossing the state border in accordance with Section 4 of the State Border Guard Law.
