On Tuesday, March 19, in Krāslava Municipality, border guards seized 80000 contraband cigarettes.

While checking information on the illegal movement of tobacco products, border guards of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard stopped an Audi A6 car driven by a Latvian citizen in Krāslava municipality. During the inspection of the car, the border guards detected eight polythene-wrapped packages of contraband cigarettes "NZ Gold" in the luggage compartment.

In total, border guards seized 80 000 “NZ Gold” cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.

As well as, during the process of clarifying the circumstances, the border guards found that the Latvian citizen was driving the car without a driving licence obtained in accordance with the prescribed procedures.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the person under Section 221(3) of the Criminal Law (illicit movements of tobacco products committed on a large-scale) and for the criminal offence commitment the Law   provides punishment - the deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years or temporary deprivation of liberty, or probationary supervision, or community service, or fine, with or without confiscation of property.

On the other hand, officials of the State Police held the person administratively liable for driving without a driving licence.
