On Thursday, February 22, in Tukums Municipality, border guards stopped the illegal movement of tobacco products and detained a Latvian citizen in connection with cigarette smuggling.

As a result of long-term operational activities, border guards of the Ludza Board of the State Border Guard in cooperation with border guards of the Aviation and Special Operations Board of the State Border Guard detained one person in Jaunpils Municipality, who was moving 18 bundles of smuggled cigarettes from the railway tracks.

In total, border guards seized 201 600 “Keno Club” cigarettes without excise stamps.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the person under Section 190(3) of the Criminal Law for smuggling committed on a large-scale and under Section 191(3) for movement, of goods subject to customs clearance in the customs territory of the Republic of Latvia without the permission of the customs authorities, if it has been committed on a large scale.

The person was confined to a place of the State Police to be held in temporary detention.
