On Sunday, April 26, border guards stopped the illegal movement of cigarettes across the Latvia–Belarus State border and pulled a raft carrying contraband cigarettes out of the Daugava River.
While conducting border surveillance in Piedruja Parish, Krāslava Municipality, a border guard shift noticed a suspicious object floating along the current of the Daugava River. Using a State Border Guard motorboat and inspecting the border along the river, the border guards discovered eight rectangular packages wrapped in black polyethylene film. Upon inspection, they found 50 000 “NZ Gold” cigarettes and 30 000 “Queen Superslim” cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps.
The cigarettes were handed over to officials of the State Police, who initiated criminal proceedings under Section 190(3) of the Criminal Law.
It has already been reported that on Friday, April 17, border guards pulled a raft with 60 000 “NZ Gold” cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps from the Daugava River.
