On Friday, May 28, border guards stopped illegal transfer of cigarettes across the Latvian-Belarusian border and pulled a raft of smuggled cigarettes from the Daugava River.

Officials of the Border surveillance unit of Piedruja, whilst performing the service duties with the assistance of technical means of observation, spotted a raft in Daugava which, while swimming along the river, crossed the State border. Using a State Border Guard motorboat, the raft was stopped. On the inspection border guards found that the raft was made up of packed black polyethylene film, with boxes connected to the iron structure. They identified 120,000 cigarettes “Premjer” with Belarusian excise stamps.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated on large-scale smuggling following the third paragraph of Article 190 of the Criminal Law.
