On Tuesday, January 21, border guards of the Riga Board of the State Border Guard detected nine immigration violations committed by foreigners and two packages of green-brown substances in a student hostel in Riga.

While conducting immigration control, officials of the Riga Board of the State Border Guard, together with inspectors (dog handlers) of the Dog Handling Department of the Border Control and Immigration Service and a service dog, inspected a student hostel. While inspecting more than 300 foreign students, the border guards detected nine violations – all related to non-declaration of place of residence. The persons were held administratively liable under Article 4 of the Declaration of Place of Residence Law for failure to declare their new place of residence within a month.

Also, during an inspection of a room, a service dog detected the possible presence of narcotic substances in a foil packet contained in a cigarette pack. During a further inspection of the area, the service dog detected the possible presence of narcotic substances in another foil packet located near the external door of the student hostel. The seized packages were handed over to the State Police. The exact weight of the seized substances will be ascertained by forensic examination. The State Police initiated two administrative offence cases under Section 48(1) of the Law on the Legal Trade of Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances and Medicinal Products, and also Precursors for the unauthorised purchase or storage of narcotic or psychotropic substances in small amounts.
