On Tuesday, May 5, border guards detained another bribe-giver at the Silene Border Control Point - a Belarusian citizen tried to bribe the border guards by offering a bribe in an amount of 10 euros.

 

Carrying out the border check on persons and means of transport crossing the state border, the border guards identified that entering Latvia truck and trailer, driven by a Belarusian citizen, had not been subjected to the State technical inspection in accordance with the established procedure.

In order not to be held administratively liable, the driver offered a bribe of 10 euros to the border guards.

According to Article149.24 of the LAVC, in the case of the utilisation of such vehicle in road traffic, to which a State technical inspection has not been carried out in the required time period - a fine was imposed on the driver of the vehicle in an amount of 120 euros, while criminal proceedings were initiated for bribery under Article 323(1) of the Criminal Law, a person was held criminally liable by concluding an agreement with a prosecutor in Daugavpils Prosecutor's Office on admission of guilt and a fine in an amount of 10 minimum monthly salaries, i.e. 4300 euros.

Bribery qualifies as a serious crime punishable in accordance with the Latvian Criminal Law by the deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years, or temporary deprivation of liberty, or community service, or a fine in an amount of ten up to two thousand minimum salaries set by the Republic of Latvia.
