On Wednesday, 23 March, 2022 two citizens of Sri Lanka have been detained in Daugavpils for intentional crossing of the state border, and their carrier has been prosecuted.

On Wednesday night, the officers of the State Police stopped a Škoda Kamiq car in Daugavpils which exceeded the speed limit and found three citizens of Sri Lanka in it. Officers of the State Police handed over foreigners to the officials of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard, who, during an inspection of persons, found out that two of mentioned persons have crossed the state border illegally, while the third citizen of Sri Lanka was their carrier.

Border guards detained two citizens of Sri Lanka according to the Immigration Law. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the persons in accordance with Section 284 (2) of the Criminal Law for intentional illegal crossing of the state border in a group of persons, while criminal proceedings against the carrier have been initiated under Section 285.1 (2) for knowingly ensuring persons the possibility to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia, if it has been committed for the purpose of acquiring property or if such possibility is ensured for two or several persons.

Materials of the criminal case have been forwarded to the South Latgale Prosecutor’s Office for criminal prosecution, in turn South Latgale Prosecutor’s Office prosecuted the carrier and a prosecutor’s order was imposed, setting a fine of 10 minimum monthly wages, i.e. 5,000 euros.
