On Friday, April 10, at the Grebņeva Border Control Point, border guards detained a bribe-giver — a German citizen who attempted to bribe border guards.

While performing checkpoint operator duties at the Grebņeva Border Control Point, a border guard was approached by a German citizen who wanted to enter the checkpoint without registering in the Electronic Queue Reservation System and cross the border more quickly.

Upon approaching the border guard again, the German citizen offered to pay €100 as a bribe in exchange for being allowed to cross the border.

Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the German citizen for giving or offering a bribe under Section 323(1) of the Criminal Law. The person has been recognized as a suspect, and the case has been forwarded under the accelerated procedure to the East Latgale Prosecutor’s Office for the initiation of criminal prosecution.

Bribery is classified as a serious crime, punishable under the Criminal Law by the deprivation of liberty for a period of up to five years, or temporary deprivation of liberty, or probation supervision, or community service, or a fine.
