On Thursday, February 3, 2022 a border guard has been identified as a suspect for failing to report a serious crime - an offer of a bribe, while another officer was arrested in mid - January for soliciting and accepting a bribe.
In November last year, during the internal control measures, officials of the Accommodation Center for Detained Foreigners „Daugavpils” of the Daugavpils I Category Service of the Daugavpils Board, detected a mobile phone near one of the detained citizen of Ukraine, which was illegally delivered to him by an official of the State Border Guard. Based on a given fact, on November 15, 2021, criminal proceedings were initiated at the State Border Guard pursuant to Section 320, Paragraph two of the Criminal Law regarding the request of a bribe made by a public official personally and for the commission of an illegal act.
As part of the criminal proceedings, on January 18, 2022, an inspector of the Operational Management and Security Unit of the Detained Foreigners Accommodation Center “Mucenieki” of the Riga Board was detained for requesting and accepting a bribe, while on February 3, 2022 an officer of the Daugavpils Board was identified as a suspect under Art 315 of the Criminal Law for failure to report a serious crime - an offer of a bribe. It has been found out that the given official performed the duties of the service at the Accommodation Center for Detained Foreigners „Daugavpils” of the Daugavpils I Category Service of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard.
It has been established that the said official performed the duties of the service at the Daugavpils Category I Detained Foreigners Accommodation Center “Daugavpils” of the Daugavpils Department of the State Border Guard.
The applicable punishment for accenting or requesting a bride is deprivation of liberty for a period of up to eight years, with or without confiscation of property and with deprivation of the right to engage in specific employment or to take up a specific office for a period up to five years.
Failure to report on the fact of commitment of a serious crime, on the other hand, is punishable by up to two years of imprisonment or temporary custodial sentence, probation supervision, community service or a fine.
