During the first working days after the holidays, the Criminal Investigation Service of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard detained two persons in Augšdaugava Municipality for transporting persons who had illegally crossed the State border and prevented 15 persons from illegally crossing the state border.

On Tuesday, May 5, while checking received information regarding the transportation of persons illegally crossing the state border, operational personnel of the Criminal Investigation Service of the Daugavpils Board of the State Border Guard stopped a Chrysler vehicle in Tabore Parish using flashing lights and sound signals. The vehicle was driven by a Ukrainian citizen. During inspection of the vehicle, seven persons of Asian origin without valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits were found inside the car, and it was also established that one more person was hiding at the group’s meeting location.

Likewise, on the morning of Wednesday, May 6, border guards of the Criminal Investigation Service stopped an Audi vehicle in Skrudaliena Parish driven by a Latvian citizen. During inspection of the vehicle, seven persons of Asian origin without valid travel documents, visas, or residence permits were found in the passenger compartment and luggage compartment.

Criminal proceedings were initiated against the “carriers” under Section 285.1, Paragraph 3 of the Criminal Law for providing a large number of persons with the opportunity to reside illegally in the Republic of Latvia.
