On Sunday, August 30, border guards stopped the illegal transportation of tobacco products in Augšdaugava Municipality. During an inspection of the border area, border guards detected an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) in a forest in Demene Parish. During an inspection of the border area, border guards detected an unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) in a forest in Demene Parish. A rectangular box wrapped in white polyethylene film and containing smuggled cigarettes was attached underneath the drone. In total, the border guards seized 15,000 NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps. Criminal proceedings were initiated under Section 190, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law for smuggling on a significant scale. As part of the criminal proceedings, the border guards also seized the unmanned aerial vehicle.
